A convicted lingerie thief who tooled around in a luxury SUV even after admitting to bilking the welfare system out of more than $117,555 will now feel the “sting” of her massive debt to society after a judge admitted his sentence of easy payments was wrong.
The court is calculating new restitution payments for Jennifer Stevanovich, 32, of Lawrence, after the Herald reported last week the welfare cheat was still driving the same silver Mercedes ML350 she leased last year when police searched her home for stolen Victoria’s Secret panties she re-sold on eBay.
“The process by which the sentence was imposed and the restitution payment order was made were flawed,” wrote Judge Peter W. Agnes Jr., who revoked his previous order to have Stevanovich make $100 payments to the government during her probation. “She will feel the ‘sting’ of a monthly payment towards her restitution obligation for the next 15 years.”
Stevanovich, a hairdresser at Super Cuts in Burlington, went from living in a gated community in Andover on a public housing voucher as her bank account ballooned to as much as $76,468 in 2004 due to her profitable panty raiding to sharing a Lawrence duplex with her mother and three children.
“The court was not informed and did not inquire into whether the defendant had ownership or control of any personal property, such as a luxury automobile or jewelry, that were acquired with any of the funds she was charged with stealing,” Agnes wrote.
Agnes ordered a complete a review of Stevanovich’s financial resources, assets, financial needs, salary and any financial assistance. He also ordered any property owned, leased or controlled by Stevanovich with money she grabbed because of her crimes be converted into cash and put toward restitution.
The court has the permission to ask Victoria’s Secret and the public agencies defrauded by Stevanovich to develop a monthly restitution payment plan that “stings” the offender without depriving her of necessities for “daily living” and support of her family, Agnes wrote.
